How to choose the right scalpel blades as a podiatrist?

In order to practice your pedicure/podiatry profession in accordance with the rules of the art, it is crucial to equip yourself with the right equipment, and in particular, qualitative blades. Podialux, a partner of choice when it comes to pedicure/podiatry equipment, explains which scalpel blades to choose as a pedicure/podiatrist in France.

Choosing your surgical blades for the medical environment with care

Podialux advises you in the choice of your scalpel bladesThe pedicure/podiatry profession involves providing care and treatment for the feet, toes, and nails using adequate equipment. Among the many instruments you need for your podiatric care, the blades allow to remove callous tissue and corns for example.

It is therefore essential to choose your surgical blades for pedicure/podiatry well, depending on the ability they offer you to perform these care and treatments properly.

What are the blades you need for pedicure and podiatry?

As part of practicing your profession, you first need to equip yourself with specific handles on which to fix your blades, namely numbers 3 and 4.

Then, you need to have blades compatible with these handles, which vary according to their use and are distinguished between sterile and non-sterile. Sterile blades are particularly recommended for so-called "at risk" patients, for example those suffering from diabetes or cancer.

Finally, you need to have small blades, suitable for toe care, and large blades, suitable for treating the heel of the foot.

Here are the main types of scalpel blades you will need to perform your podiatric treatments:

  • Number 6: This pedicure/podiatry scalpel blade has a slightly curved cutting surface and allows great precision. It is ideal in particular for removing corns.
  • Number 10: This scalpel blade safely eliminates hyperkeratosis thanks to its curved cutting edge.
  • Number 11: This is a longer blade, with a cutting edge on the hypotenuse, which offers nice precision when working on soft tissues.
  • Number 15: This pedicure/podiatry scalpel has a blade with a cutting and curved edge, ideal for removing calluses, corns, or durillons and working on specific areas of the foot.
  • Numbers 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24: With their curved cutting edges and larger sizes, these pedicure/podiatry scalpel blades allow the removal of hyperkeratosis on a larger surface of the foot.

These blades should not be confused with gouge blades which, although they bear the same numbers, are not used for the same reasons.
